SARHA NEWS-The Ambassador of Japan to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Mr. Asari Hideki, visited Husn Girls School, operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), on Monday. During the visit, he observed the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) activities facilitated by school counsellors and funded by the Government of Japan. Ambassador Asari also visited the Garden Camp to see the living conditions of Palestinian refugees from Syria and to meet with families receiving cash assistance supported by the Japanese Government.
During his visit, Ambassador Asari was briefed on UNRWA’s recent operations and programmes by Mr. Olaf Becker, Director of UNRWA Affairs in Jordan.
Ambassador Asari expressed his deep appreciation for the essential role that UNRWA plays in providing vital services to Palestine refugees throughout the region, including in Jordan. Recognizing the significant challenges faced by UNRWA in recent years, he reaffirmed Japan’s unwavering support for UNRWA’s efforts to sustain the lives of the most vulnerable populations.
From UNRWA’s side, Director of UNRWA Affairs Mr. Olaf Becker said, “Thanks to the Government of Japan and its generous contribution, UNRWA is able to deliver essential humanitarian services, including cash assistance for the most vulnerable Palestine refugees from Syria who rely solely on us. Japan’s support also extends to funding summer camps, learning recovery initiatives, and school counsellors who provide psychosocial support to tens of thousands of UNRWA students. With the ongoing financial crisis, these UNRWA services would not be possible without Japan’s steadfast and continued partnership.”
The Japanese Government has allocated $2 million to UNRWA Jordan for the project ‘Critical Humanitarian Assistance to Palestine Refugees in Jordan in Social Safety, Education, Psychosocial and Protection Services’ for the period between March 2025 and March 2026, which provides basic needs for vulnerable Palestine refugees and supports youth education and trainings.
